Irrational and excessive use of natural resources has led to increase in global temperature. We are paying for leading a highly luxurious and leisure life opined Dr Rajalakshmi, Principal Scientist at MS Swaminathan Foundation, Chennai.
Dr Rajalakshmi was speaking at inaugural session of a two-day-long workshop on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), Climate Change and Water Policy organised by Krishak Biradri on Saturday. The programme has also been supported by Oxfam India and State Water Resources Department.
According to Dr Rajalakshmi, constantly changing climatic condition across nation has created troubles for farmers. There is growing need to include the suggestions raised by cultivators in policies of State and Union Government.
She further suggested that the farmers should go for mixed crop or alternate crop to reduce water consumption for irrigation and this will also provide opportunity to the farmers to get more benefit.
Former Agriculture Minister Chandrashekhar Sahu, who was also present on the occasion, said that farmers in Chhattisgarh have high potential, but they require proper guidance and knowledge about new techniques being developed for yielding good crops. In the meantime while adopting new techniques, we should not forget our traditional organic farming skills, he added.
Farmers from district and Janpad Panchayats along with social workers from various districts took part in the workshop.
Convener of the programme Pradeep Sharma said that our focus is on providing information to the farmers about new technological developments in agriculture and ways to curb the menace of climate change.
