Chhattisgarh State BJP chief Dharamlal Kaushik said that the results of urban body polls are not disappointing as it has widened the base of the party. The number of BJP representatives in urban bodies has increased by 10-12 per cent, he said.
Talking in a Press conference here at BJP’s Raipur division headquarters ‘Ekatm Parisar’ on Monday, Kaushik said that the total number of corporators in the municipal corporations of the State is 538 out of which 257 corporators are of BJP while the number of Congress corporators is 198.
The BJP has a share of 45.7 per cent, Congress 36.4 per cent while 15.4 per cent are the independent candidates, he said. Kaushik explained that in the municipal councils, there are 767 corporators out of which 362 are of BJP (47.5 per cent), Congress 285 corporators (37.5 per cent) and 120 independent corporators.
These figures indicate that BJP has 10-12 per cent higher number of corporators than Congress in the municipal corporations and municipal councils. This proves that the party base has increased in the urban bodies.
Reacting strongly to Congress leaders’ demand of Chief Minister’s resignation, Kaushik said that why did Congress State President Bhupesh Baghel and ClP leader TS Singhdeo not seek resignation from their National President Sonia Gandhi for the nation-wide defeat received by their party.
On a question regarding resentment among people against the State Government, Kaushik said that it is due to development and other works undertaken by BJP Government in public interest, people have elected BJP in the State as well as at the Centre.
“The party will review the results of urban body election and identify the cause of below par performance. lack of coordination on many occasions has led to the defeat of a number of candidate and party will remove the shortcomings in preparations for the three-phase panchayat polls,” said Kaushik adding that he takes the moral responsibility of party’s below par performance in the urban body polls.
He said that people are not angry with the State Government and the Chief Minister. Had the people been angry, BJP might have not won the posts of Mayor in Bilaspur and Durg. The issues are being blown out of proportion by Congress leaders.
The State Government has its full support to the farmers and the farmers would elect BJP supported candidates in the panchayat elections. Kaushik said that a Committee has been formed for selection of candidates for the Panchayat election.
