Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh will \\chair a crucial meeting of the Unified Command on Maoists on Tuesday at the State Secretariat.
The meeting has been called in the backdrop of a deadly Maoist attack on May 25 on a convoy of India's ruling Congress party in Bastar region’s Sukma district that wiped out the top leadership of the Congress in the State, including former Union Minister VC Shukla, State Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel and Mahendra Karma who was credited for the launch of a civil-militia movement Salwa Judum.Sources here at the police headquarters informed that senior officials of the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve
Police Force (CRPF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will hold a detailed discussion with top officials of the Chhattisgarh police and State Home Department regarding better co-ordination and operational issues in Bastar among various forces being engaged in anti-insurgency operations.
"The main focus at the unified command meeting will be to establish a better co-ordination among various security agencies which are taking on Maoists,'' the source added.
"There is a wider believe in police and para-military forces after May 25 attack, that the time has come now for an intensified attack on Maoists to dismantle their terror infrastructure in the vast jungle pockets of Chhattisgarh, but a final decision would be taken at the unified command meeting only,'' a senior CRPF officer said.
Chhattisgarh's Bastar region which is made up of seven districts and is spread out in about 40,000 sq km area, is known as Maoists' stronghold in the country. Police say Maoists have established a parallel government in Bastar interiors since the late 1980s.
