State AIDS Control Society (SACS) will conduct a review meeting of all the 16 public sector blood banks operating in the State on March 20 to check whether they have achieved their targets and utilised their funds judiciously.
Authorities in SACS have said that if it is found that the blood banks have failed to collect targeted units of blood in the period of one year, their contract will not be renewed.
“Depending on the scale of the blood banks, we have allotted them targets varying from minimum 2,000 units to maximum 15,000 units. But there are reports that some of the blood banks have abysmal records. It is unlikely that we will renew their contracts,” said Dr Vipin Bihari Agrawal, Joint Director of State AIDS Control Society.
According to sources in the department, Model Blood Bank in the government-run Dr BR Ambedkar Hospital has achieved only 25 percent of its target despite getting the maximum funds including a bus worth Rs 1.5 crore.
It may be noted that the blood banks get hefty funds from the state government and are given targets for one financial year to organise a number of blood donation camps and collect directed units of blood from donors.
Decision of renewing the contracts will be solely based on performance of the blood banks, Agrawal said.
