Triple talaq bill a milestone to empower Muslim women: Raman

Published on:

BJP national vice president and former chief minister Raman Singh termed passage of triple talaq bill in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as “historical moment” for the country as on the day “Muslim sisters have been freed from a social evil prevalent for centuries.”

He claimed the passage of the bill empowered the Muslim women and had given them equal rights guaranteed by the constitution.

Addressing media on Wednesday at BJP divisional office, ‘Ekatma Parisar’, he     further said it was one of the courageous decisions of the Modi government.

He said the erstwhile Rajiv Gandhi-led government on the basis of majority had changed the Supreme Court order in Shah Bano Begum case in 1985 but in the year 2017, Shayara Bano Kamal and others filed a case in which the Supreme Court on August 22, 2017 ordered to make law on triple talaq. Congress and other     parties opposed it when Modi government tabled the bill, he said, adding soon it would be a law.

Raman Singh said country would never forgive Congress for the Shah Bano case. On three points country boiled with discussion on provision of bail, right for compromise and right of wife to lodge complaint. It has opened path for Muslim sisters to lead a better life with freedom.

He further said NDA-2 has shown that in coming days how quickly decisions would be taken. “Many countries     including Pakistan do not have provision for triple talaq, but we had been carrying the burden,” he pointed out.
