nA tribal youth committed suicide in a Covid-19 quarantine centre in Chhattisgarh's Kawardha district, police said on Thursday.

Tulsi Baiga, 26, returned from Maharashtra on July 11 and was quarantined in Damgarh village in Kukdur police station limits, Kawardha Superintendent of Police K.L. Dhruv said.

On Wednesday, others at the centre were released as they tested Covid negative. Tulsi was the only one left behind as he was not tested, the officer said.

The youth tried to escape from the centre but was stopped. The door of his room was locked and his father was seated outside, a police officer said.

On the night of Wednesday and Thursday, he threatened to commit suicide, forcing his father to go the village to summon other relatives, police said. Before they reached the centre, Baiga had hanged himself.

Police have registered a case and are investigating.
