A 28-year-old man and his two children died while his wife and mother suffered serious burn injuries in a fire that broke out at their home in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur on Saturday wee hours, police said.
The fire broke out when the victims were sleeping in their tin-shed hut in Sweeper Colony in Tikrapara area, Raipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Arif Shaikh said. Soon after being alerted, a rescue team was rushed to the spot and blaze was doused, he said.
While Sujit Das was charred to death at the spot, his son Tuktuk (5) and daughter Kavya (3) succumbed to serious burn injuries at a local hospital, the SP said.
According to the SP, Das’s wife and mother also suffered serious burn injuries and are undergoing treatment at the hospital. It is being suspected that an electric short circuit could have triggered the fire, but the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, he said.
We have decided to conduct a joint survey by Raipur Municipal Corporation, district Police and fire department in sweepers colony to make sure that such incidents do not repeat, SP Shaikh said.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Bhupesh has also expressed deep sorrow over the mishap. The district administration has provided immediate financial assistance of Rs 12 lakh to the family members of the victims.
