Chhattisgarh Police on Friday arrested three persons, including the mastermind, for kidnapping a 12-year-old boy and making an extortion call of Rs 5 lakh to the family in Raigarh district.

Raigarh Superintendent of Police Santosh Singh told The Pioneer that the mastermind, Vikas Tirkey, and his accomplices Arun Toppo and Rameshwar Manjhi, all of Dhauragaon in the district, were in custody.

Rahul Bada was abducted while returning home from a mill on Thursday evening, the officer said.

His family started getting frequent extortion calls from the kidnappers, who sought Rs 5 lakh or threatened the boy with dire consequences. Following the family’s complaint, police started a probe.

Police learnt that the three accused were not in the village since the incident, Singh said.

Acting on a tip, police rescued the abducted boy from the abductors in a jungle, he said.

The accused confessed their involvement in the crime. Vikas told the police that he knew Rahul’s father had sold his ancestral property and was planning to buy a Scorpio. So, they kidnapped his son.

Police recovered a bike used in the crime besides three mobile phones, three knives, a rope and the boy’s bicycle, Singh said.
