Police on Wednesday arrested three persons from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and brought them to Bilaspur for cheating the editor of a Hindi daily and his friends in Chhattisgarh of Rs 82 lakh on the pretext of admitting their children into medical courses in Delhi University in 2018.
Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal said those arrested were Prabhudeep Singh (34) and Dr Jiya-Ul-Haq Rehmani (33), both from Uttar Pradesh, and Deepak Chatterjee (31) of Delhi.
A few days ago, Editor Tarun Sahu (50) lodged complaint against the three for cheating him of Rs 35 lakh and his friends Bhagwat Sahu of Rs 15 lakh, Deepak Sharma of Rs 10 lakh and Ramakant Sahu of Rs 22 lakh, saying their children would get admission in MBBS course in DU, the officer said.
Acting on a tip, a joint team of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra Police nabbed Deepak from Dilshad Colony in Delhi while Rehmani and Singh were arrested from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, he said.
All three reportedly confessed their involvement in the crime.
Investigation showed that the three used to trap their victims by impressing them through their lavishing life-style and so-called high-profile contacts which they claimed would clinch the admission issue.
Police seized five mobile phones and Rs 5 lakh cash from them, Agarwal said.
