A surgical team of specialists at MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital here performed a highly complicated surgery on a 13-year-old girl who was brought with only 20 per cent of heart functioning on account of multiple complications in the heart.
The surgery performed on the young girl is the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh. There was a tight constriction of the main blood pipe of the body with leakage in two blood valves of the heart besides other serious complications, MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital’s Chief of Medical Services Dr Ashok Zargar informed at a news conference hereon Friday.
He said that the girl belongs to a financially weak. ‘The patient then was registered for ‘Mukyamantri Bal Hrudaya Surksha Yojana’ and the finance for the surgery was made available from the scheme’.
The total cost of the surgery was Rs 2 lakh out of which the Chhattisgarh government paid Rs 1.80 lakh from the scheme.
‘Considering the complexity and weak condition of the heart, the surgical team comprising Cardiac surgeon, Dr Nishant Singh Chandel, Cardiac Anesthetist and Intensivist Dr Alok Swain and Cardiac Anesthetist Dr Arun Andappan decided to perform the surgery in three stages,’ Dr Zargar said.
The first stage of the surgery was focussed to improve heart pumping for which minimal invasive surgery was performed.
About three months later a ‘Stent Angioplasty’ was performed to widen the constriction in the heart which improved the blood pumping rate from 20 per cent to 40 per cent, he said.
The patient in the final stage was now ready for the main surgery known as ‘Bentall Surgery’. This surgery replaced the damaged valves, aorta and coronary arteries and re-implanted it on the artificial blood tube for continuous blood supply to the heart,
Dr Zargar said.
“The patient would lead a completely normal life as she grows up but would have to take a blood thinning medication all her life,’commented Cardiac Anesthesist Dr Arun Andappan.
He said that utmost care was taken by the team to ensure that the brain received the required blood supply during surgery. The girl’s father said that it was the financial help received under ‘Mukyamantri Bal Hrudaya Surksha Yojana’ that save the life of his daughter.
