Statistics has special importance in making Government plans and policies, said State planning commission advisor and former chief secretary SK Mishra.
While addressing a symposium organized on the occasion of National Statistics Day under the joint aegis of Chhattisgarh State Finance and Statistics directorate and National Sample Survey office at the new Rest House here on Saturday, Mishra, stressing on making better quality of figures, said that right policies and plans could be prepared only on the basis of better quality of figures. Additional chief secretary, finance DS Mishra and specialists from the field of finance and statistics were present at the symposium. Prizes were distributed to the winners of drawing and essay competitions on the occasion.
Mishra, who was the chief guest of the programme, said that though statistics has its own special importance, it has several challenges also, especially, the challenges are of more serious nature in a country like India where it would be very difficult to gather right figures about people of different social, economic, geographical and culture. In such a situation, the importance of statistics increases in collecting right and legitimate figures. He said that employees of various departments of the State Government should be made aware of the importance of statistics, so that right figures could be used while making plans.
Additional chief secretary DS Mishra, enunciating the importance of sampling while gathering figures for making plans, said that the selection of formulae of sample and sampling should be such that it represents the whole population and on the basis of it actual plans could be made. Special secretary finance PC Mishra, director economics and statistics Amitabh Panda, member of State finance department Dr Ashok Parakh, famous economist Dr Hanumant Yadav and HoD Statistics of Pt Ravishankar Shukla University Dr Vyas Narayan Dubey also addressed the symposium. National Statistics Day is being observed in memory of famous statistician of the country Dr PC Mahalnobis.
