The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Chhattisgarh on Thursday limited the number of star campaigners for the Marwahi by-election to 30.
The decision has been taken in view of the Covid pandemic.
The Election Commission has issued similar directives for state Assembly polls and by-elections in Bihar and other states, an official press release said.
The Marwahi by-election is happening due to the death of former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, founder of the regional Janta Congress Chhattisgarh Jogi.
The EC has limited the maximum numbers of star campaigners for national parties to 30, from the earlier 40. Likewise, non-recognized political parties can launch only 15 start campaigners, down from 20.
CEO Chhattisgarh Reena Babasaheb Kangale said the political parties can submit the list of their star campaigners within 10 days after the notification is issued. It earlier was seven days.
“Those political parties who had submitted the names of their star campaigners can now submit the updated list within the time limit,” the CEO was quoted as saying in the press release.
