Scarcity of Professors and lecturers at Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College has affected its demand for increasing the post-graduate seats for medical students. The Medical Council of India has allowed only three more PG seats in the college against a demand of 50 seats.
Presently, there are 83 post-graduate seats in the government-run college and its demand of increasing the seats to 133 seats was denied by the MCI. The medical body cited that more PG seats will not be allotted to the college unless it solves the problem of staff crunch.
One PG seat has been added in ophthalmology and two seats in biochemistry. Admission for the three seats will begin in the next academic session. According to sources in the college, the administration had demanded to increase PG seats in medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology and other departments.
The MCI team had inspected the college on January 31 and had commented on the posts lying vacant. It instructed the college authorities to fill up the posts through Public Service Commission examination. The administration has decided to write to the State Government in this regard.
Confirming the report, Dean of the medical college Dr Ashok Chandrakar said the MCI had allowed an increase of only three PG seats against the demand of 50. He said that the PG seats will be increased after the college fills up the vacant posts through PSC examination.
It may be noted that Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had said during the inauguration of the AIIMS here that the number of PG seats in the medical colleges in the State would soon be increased. However, the MCI decision has come as a big setback for the college.
