Soil erosion can lead to food shortages

Published on:

The speed at which soil is being eroded, the ability of farmers to grow food will be reduced by 40 percent in the coming 20 years.

Hence, it is important to create awareness about saving the earth. It is for this that a ‘Save Soil Movement’ programme was held at Guru Ghasidas

Central University in Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh on Sunday.

The event was held under the aegis of the Forestry Department and Isha Foundation, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

In the programme, volunteers of Isha Foundation interacted with about 150 students of the university's forestry, zoology, botany and biotechnology departments.

The volunteers said the soil on which food is now grown may go extinct if it continued to get eroded at the same rate, creating global food shortages.

To make people aware of this problem, spiritual guru Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is traveling from London to Tamil Nadu, about 30,000 km in all on motorbike, the volunteers of Isha Foundation said.
