Social media is a twin-edged sword which can make or break one’s image. That’s why people today need to develop smart media presence, said Dr Vinita Sahay, IIM Raipur. Dr Sahay is co-chairperson of the first ever International Conference on Social Media (ICSM) 2014 scheduled on January 10 and 11.
Dr Vinita Sahay, the chairperson of student affairs, said that social media started from embers and caught on like wild-fire. In the present day world, it is hard to imagine anyone from Generation Y and younger not having an online presence. It is estimated that by 2025, Generation Y will form 70 per cent of the global workforce.
According to IIM officials, a survey was conducted by Jobvite, an online company spreading job opportunities across social networks. In the survey it found that the recruiters are increasingly referring to the social profiles of prospective candidates as a part of their overall evaluation. 93 per cent of recruiters refer to the online presence of candidates. Around 42 per cent of those surveyed have re-assessed the candidates both positively and negatively based on their findings from online referral. Good acts of social work were also positively rated.
Keeping the relevance of social media and its rapid proliferation in mind, Indian Institute of Management Raipur is conducting ICSM 2014, on 10th and 11th Jan 2014, the first ever International Conference on Social Media in India- where learning, sharing and exploring all happens at the same time. Prof BS Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur will inaugurate the event. Experts from the industry will deliberate on burning topics such as “leveraging Social Media for HR and Allied Perspectives” which will bring out actual insights from the industry.
Following these, one can convert the present day practice of online presence from a point of vulnerability to a point of strength. Under the able guidance of conference co-chairs Dr Vinita Sahay and Dr. Sanjeev Prashar ICSM will witness various policy makers, eminent personalities from various government bodies and practitioners from across the globe.
