Security forces on Friday recovered and defused two powerful improvised explosive devices (IEDs), allegedly planted by Maoists in the restive Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

The explosives packed in steel containers were seized between Tarrem and Basaguda  coming under Basaguda police station limits, a CRPF official informed.

While one IED weighed 7 kgs, another was of around 5 kgs, he added.

A joint squad of Central Reserve Police Force’s 168th battalion and CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) 204th battalion was carrying out an area domination exercise in Basaguda region.

While cordoning off the area, they spotted the first explosive close to a bridge on a rivulet on the road and another near the same location, the official said adding that it was planted by rebels to target the security personnel during their operation in the area.

The explosives were immediately defused by the bomb disposal squad, he added.
