The Chhattisgarh Government has decided to set up a second forensic laboratory in Bastar division, officials said on Saturday. Officials say that Bastar divisional area is bigger than Kerala State and the second unit would help police investigate crimes in more scientific way. It will also reduce pressure on the laboratory already working in Bastar.
Sources said the new unit would be opened in Kanker and the administration has already started identifying the required land. If everything goes fine, the work for the unit is likely to commence in April. Once the laboratory is established, the Government needs to appoint required number of scientists. The new unit will reduce the distance for police officials who have been working in remote area of Bhanupratapur, Khanjar.
At present the laboratory at Jagdalpur gets cases from Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Bijapur, Dantewada, and Sukma districts. The new unit would not only be able to examine semen and blood, it will also carry out critical examination like DNA test and brain mapping.
Similarly the forensic team could rush to the scene of crime or accident spots with shorter duration of time. This will also reduce the cost of expenditure, they said. Quick forensic examination will help police to crack a case in less time. Joint director of the forensic science laboratory, Jagdalpur Dr B Suribabu said the Government has also already sanctioned a mobile forensic unit.
