SC directive to finally end red beacon light misuse

Published on:

With Supreme Court directive on red beacon lights to be allowed only by persons holding constitutional posts and high dignitaries, traffic policemen across Chhattisgarh may now find it easier to penalise violators.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh Government had come out with a detailed circular on February 14 this year for ensuring strict compliance of its order regarding eligibility of  both individuals and officials allowed to use red, yellow and red-blue beacon lights on their respective official vehicles. The Chhattisgarh Government had released the circular from the Mantralaya and also attached with it a list of individuals and officials who are eligible for using red, yellow and red-blue beacon lights on their official vehicles.

The order however saw little compliance as policemen were scared to stop vehicles using beacon lights fearing wrath of the officials occupying them to check their eligibility for using the privilege. The circular was sent to additional chief secretaries, principal secretaries, secretaries, departmental heads, divisional commissioners, district collectors. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSPs) and Superintendent of Police in all districts.
