Following directives of Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Raipur, a surprise inspection was recently carried out in showrooms of at least 10 automobile dealers in the city.

The objective of the inspection was to ensure strict compliance of directives issued by State Transport Department regarding collection of fee, tax and fulfillment of other formalities during selling of vehicles.

As per information received, on the receipt of complaint that automobile showrooms operational in the city are allegedly charging fees and collecting tax more than what had been fixed by the Transport Department, the Regional Transport Officer  constituted three teams for carrying out inspection in showrooms.

The teams reportedly inspected as many as 10 showrooms and directed dealers to ensure full compliance of rules and also sought clarification from few showrooms for overlooking the directives earlier.

The State government has fixed `60 for registration of two-wheelers, `120 for smart card,  seven percent cost of vehicle as lifetime tax whereas `200 for registration of car (with cost less than `5 lakh), `120 for smart card, `100 finance and eight percent of vehicle’s cost as lifetime tax. Similarly, for car (with cost more than `5 lakh) lifetime tax is nine percent of the vehicle’s cost while other fee charged are the same.

In the interest of people purchasing new vehicles, a facility of online registration has been given to automobile dealers under 'Dealer Point Registration System' from November 2012, officials informed. The automobile dealers have been directed to ensure proper display of information regarding registration fees, tax and fancy numbers fixed by Chhattisgarh’s Transport Department at their showrooms.
