An amount of Rs79.32 lakh had been distributed to 13,000 students under the Physically Handicapped Students' Scholarships' Scheme in the year 2014-15. The State Government’s Social Welfare Board officials said that the scholarships are given to the handicapped students of Primary, Pre-Middle Upper Middle schools and colleges', officials stated.
The Physically Handicapped Students' Scholarships' Scheme is given to encourage the students to upgrade their educational qualifications. The Department officers said that the amount varies from Rs50 to Rs240 per month depending upon the classes they are studying.
The visually-impaired students get an additional allowance Rs50 as 'Reader Allowance'. About 14,290 students received the Physically Handicapped Scholarships in the year 2008-09 and 13,150 were given Scholarships in 2014-15.
