Roka-Chheka: an old tradition revived

Published on:

With the onset of        monsoon, efforts are on launch Roka-Chheka Abhiyan in Chhattisgarh to keep the cattle away from standing crops and roads.

Roka-Chheka is an old tradition under which the villagers make arrangements to properly manage the          livestock.

But in the last few decades, as a result of         mechanization in                agriculture, livestock    maintenance was becoming uneconomical. Many cattle ranchers left their cattle as strays on the roads.

Taking the initiative to solve this problem, the Chhattisgarh government has revived Roka-Chheka Abhiyan with public             cooperation.

Farmers are directly benefitted under the              campaign for the last three years. Proper management of livestock is keeping the cattle away from the farms, saving the crops from           damage.

Besides, the health of the livestock has improved due to proper maintenance. Milk production has also increased. Cases of road accidents have fallen as the animals keep away from the streets.

As Chhattisgarh is an agricultural state, the      number of cattle owners is high. The biggest challenge before them is to properly take care of the animals.

The number of livestock has increased in the state due to cow dung                          procurement, manure        production and construction of cow sheds.

Animals are being kept under control through Roka-Chheka campaign, which has reduced the chances of road accidents and damage to crops.
