Taking up their demands, including remuneration, sanitation, workers of Raipur Municipal Corporation again launched a strike on Monday bringing cleanliness schedule of several wards to a standstill.

Reacting strongly to the frequent strikes of municipal workers, Mayor Kiranmayee Nayak rebuked officials of Kivar company which provides workers to RMC. She also asked Municipal Commissioner Narendra Dugga to issue a notice to the company seeking a reply on this irregularity. It may be noted that previously too, a notice had been sent to the company.

If the civic body is not satisfied with the company’s response, a third notice would be sent to the company after which the contract will be terminated.

Contract for cleaning in several wards of the city has been given to Bengaluru-based Kivar Environ Pvt ltd. Workers of the company had recently launched a four day-long strike demanding their salaries that were due since three months.

The frequent strikes are marring the arrangement of cleanliness in the wards. The RMC had then intervened and instructed the company to release salaries of the workers after which they resumed the work.

However, hundreds of workers associated with Kivar company went on a strike on Monday complaining that the company did not give them their full salaries.

They also said they are made to do overtime and are not given additional service as promised. “We have taken up our issues with the company several times in the past but no action was taken. We are left with no option but to again go on a strike,” said a municipal worker.

After president of RMC’s health department Gyanesh Sharma was apprised of the situation, he informed the Mayor about the strike. Nayak then rebuked the officials of Kivar Environ and directed them to solve the issues with the municipal workers.

“There have been regular payments to the company despite their irregular nature of services provided. A notice has been issued to the company. If we do not receive a satisfactory reply, the contract with Kivar will be terminated,” said Commissioner Dugga.
