With the onset of winter, the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) is gearing up to set up night shelters for hundreds of homeless people in the city.
“With proper space management, the RMC is going to ensure accommodation for more people compared to last year,” said an official. The shelters will be set up in different locations of the city which include, area close to Railway Station, New Bus Stand, Choubey Colony, near Vivekananda Ashram besides some other locations of the city, he said.
The capacity of night shelters being operated would be to accommodate about hundred persons or sometimes more, the official stated.
At least five night shelters were operated by RMC in city last winter but the numbers may increase this year, he said.
“The night shelters sometimes get overcrowded during mid December and January months and due to lack of space and blankets, people were asked to move out.
Sometimes the needy are not aware of the facilities and large counts of people are found sleeping on pavement and at bus stands and railway stations. This time, the RMC is going to spread awareness among them about the availability of night shelters,” the officer said.
