The Raipur Municipal Corporation’s (RMC) claims of widespread de-silting of drains and readiness to deal with rain-related problems fell flat with first heavy rainfall in the city on Wednesday evening.

Following the complaints of water-logging and water gushing in low-lying areas after a strong spell of rain, RMC Commissioner, Avneesh Kumar Sharan on Thursday visited many areas to take stock of the situation.Though the Regional Meteorological Department has announced arrival of monsoon but the civic body officials are yet to remove hurdles encountering in construction of a 1 km long ‘nullah’ from Vegetable Market to Boria in Santoshi Nagar under zone-6.

The ‘nullah’ is being developed to solve the problem of water-logging and to drain out the rainwater with an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore. However, only about 30 per cent of the work was completed yet while rest of the construction was halted due to various hurdles coming in its way.Sharan along with the zone-6 Commissioner, GS Kshatri and other officials concerned took stock the site and issued appropriate instructions in this regard.

Sharan also reviewed cleanliness work at Shankar Nagar nullah passing though Shakti Nagar main road.He asked the officials concerned to keep a close watch on the work underway to ensure that the problem of water-logging would not arise during the rains.RMC Health Officer, Dr Shiv Sharma, the Solid Waste Management In-charge Officer, AK Malve, the zone-3 Commissioner, P Rajesh Nayadu and other officials concerned accompanied Sharan during the inspection.

last night, rains caused water-logging in many areas and water gushed in houses due to chocking of drains. After a dry period of a fortnight, the rains lashed the city. Though rainfall brought much needed respite from humid atmosphere, it also exposed the tall claims of preparedness of the civic body. People residing in low-lying areas faced inconvenience due water-logging and chocked drains.

The city has recently got rid of jaundice due to contaminated drinking water and now, the residents fear spread of epidemic like Cholera and Malaria due to dilapidated sanitation system and water-logging during rainy season. In this situation, it will be tough task before the civic body officials concerned to maintain cleanliness and make adequate arrangements to deal with water-logging and other rain related problems.
