Report ADR for patient safety: Expert

Published on:

Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) is a harmful reaction related to the use of a medicine and it should lead to stoppage of the drug or cutting its usage, a noted pharmacologist said on Wednesday.

Dr. Usha Joshi, Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College here, was addressing a two-day event organised under the National Pharmacovigilance Week.

The week is observed every year from September 17 to 23 for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals with an eye on patient safety.

Dr Joshi said generally the ADR is experienced following a combination of drugs under normal circumstances after its administration. If any adverse reaction is found, the drug is usually discontinued or the dose reduced.

She said the safety of the patient is top most priority. Even the general public, patients, students and people associated with education can also report ADR. She further threw light on various dimensions in need of pharmacovigilance.
