Renal transplant unit opened at AIIMS-R

A renal transplant unit has opened at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, and kidney transplant will start soon.

AIIMS Director Dr Nitin Nagarkar told The Pioneer that all the preparations have been done and a formal approval from the state government was awaited.

Recently, a medical team from the government saw the transplant unit. "After sorting out some shortcomings, we will be ready to start transplant in two to three weeks," he said.

He said eight patients and donors are waiting for the transplant to start. The ward has four beds.

"Our own faculty and surgeons are capable of doing the transplant and we don’t need any outsourcing or calling doctors from outside," Dr Nagarkar added.

Apart from AIIMS, the state-run JLN Medical College here is also set to start the transplant facility.
