Remain hydrated to tackle diarrhea complications

Diarrhea is caused by  contaminated water and, if neglected, can even cause death. To tackle it, it is best is to remain hydrated and take the prescribed medicines, said Dr Subhash Mishra, Director (Epidemic), Chhattisgarh, on Tuesday.

He said that during rainy season, there are chances of many diseases, diarrhea being one of them. It occurs due to consumption of        contaminated water or food items.

It is dangerous for        children as it weakens them faster. Diarrhea is the leading cause of death in children from birth to five years in India.

The main symptoms of diarrhea include frequent bowel movements, thin stools in acute conditions, pain and discomfort in the entire lower part of the abdomen, Mishra said.

As the disease               progresses, it causes cramps in the intestine. A condition of dehydration can arise causing weakness. There can be excessive deficiency of mineral elements with water,

It can lead to a situation where the patient can become unconsciousness and the condition can turn fatal, Mishra pointed out.

He said that personal hygiene and a healthy lifestyle were necessary to prevent it. Home remedies like intake of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and zinc are recommended. Food containing oil and spices should be avoided.

Consuming a mixture of banana, rice, apple             marmalade and toast             provides relief.

If it remains out of             control after home remedies, immediately doctors should be consulted, he said.
