Dr Punit Gupta, son-in-law of former chief minister Raman Singh, who is wanted in connection with a multi-million embezzlement case, is reportedly on the run.
Police on Thursday, raided GBG Kidney Care Hospital located in New Rajendra Nagar locality of Raipur in search of Dr Gupta. However, he was not found in the hospital.
“We have seized documents related to the embezzlement case from the hospital. We have sufficient evidences to arrest Dr Gupta. Very soon police will be sending teams to other locations to nab him,” CSP Azad Chowk Nafar Siddiqui said. He also hinted the possibility of issuing a “look out circular” to prevent Dr Gupta from fleeing abroad.
Meanwhile, former chief minister and BJP national vice-president Raman Singh, while talking to media persons, claimed that the entire action was politically motivated and that the case would not stand in the court.
“I feel the action is totally politically motivated. They are forming SIT and creating cases, but once the case reaches court, the truth will come out,” he said.
The action against Dr Gupta has come at a time, when the BJP in Chhattisgarh led by Singh, the party’s most prominent state face, was trying to prevent Congress from breaching its bastion where they have managed to secure 10 out of 11 Lok Sabha seats in past two general elections.
Dr Gupta was booked on the basis of a complaint registered by his successor Dr KK Sahare, after an audit committee formed on the directives of the state government had found out that Singh’s son-in-law was involved in serious financial irregularities when he was the superintendent of the state-run DKS super-specialty hospital, Raipur.
He has been booked under Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust) 420 (Cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security etc), 468 (Forgery for the purpose of cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
