Raise ground water level with earthen dykes: CM

Published on:

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday told officials to build dyke walls at suitable places in sandy rivers and streams to enhance the ground water level in the state.

Baghel said this is the most economic and effective way to raise the ground water level. An earthen dyke wall in the sandy banks of rivers and streams retain sufficient quantity of water in the inner surface of the river, ensuring availability of enough surface water for hand pumps, tube wells and wells even during summer, states an official communication. The Chief Minister told the officers of Panchayat and Rural Development, Water Resources and Forest Departments to identify such rivers and streams and prepare an action plan to construct dyke walls.

Baghel was addressing a meeting of senior officers of Water Resources, Forest and Panchayat and Rural Development Department here.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture and Water Resources Minister  Ravindra Choubey and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jaisingh Agarwal among many others.

A dyke wall is a structure that is constructed below the surface in the sandy part of the river and stream. Dyke wall prevents the seepage of water from the interior of the river.
