Chhattisgarh produced 527.63 lakh cubic meters of bio-gas from family type bio-gas plants and large bio-gas plants in the entire State during the 11th Five Year Plan period.
The estimated State-wise production of bio-gas from family type bio-gas plants and large biogas plants installed in the country under different programmes of the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) during the 11th Five Year Plan period is as follows (in lakh cubic metres) — Andhra Pradesh (9969.60), Assam(1616.33) Bihar (2325.94) Goa (71.83) Gujarat (8731.94) Haryana (1112.13) Himachal Pradesh (842.47) Jammu & Kashmir (47.44) Jharkhand (107.19) Karnataka (8213.62) Kerala (2399.30) Madhya Pradesh (5713.25) Maharashtra(15297.74) Manipur (38.80) Meghalaya (146.30) Mizoram (72.40) Nagaland (95.83) Odisha (4,402.65) Punjab (2,966.70) Rajasthan (1,235.30) Sikkim (144.66) Tamil Nadu (5,261.66) Tripura (53.25) Uttar Pradesh (7,765.80) Uttarakhand (531.37) West Bengal (6,213.70).
About 6.10 lakh family type bio-gas plants were installed during the 11th Five Year Plan against a target of 6.47 lakh plants under the National Biogas and Manure Management Programme.
The data available with the Ministry pointed out that the States which have taken leadership position in implementation of bagasse co-generation projects are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
The Ministry has been implementing biomass power/co-generation programme since mid nineties. A total of 288 biomass power and cogeneration projects aggregating to 2,665 MW capacity have been installed in the country for feeding power to the grid consisting of 130 biomass power projects aggregating to 999.0 MW and 158 bagasse cogeneration projects in sugar mills with surplus capacity aggregating to 1,666.0 MW.
In addition, around 30 biomass power projects aggregating to about 350 MW are under various stages of implementation. Around 70 Cogeneration projects are under implementation with surplus capacity aggregating to 800 MW.
Biomass power & Cogeneration programme is implemented with the main objective of promoting technologies for optimum use of country’s biomass resources for grid power generation. Biomass materials used for power generation include bagasse, rice husk, straw, cotton stalk, coconut shells, soya husk, de-oiled cakes, coffee waste, jute wastes, groundnut shells, saw dust etc.
Notably, SUDA in Chhattisgarh is in the process of preparing a Master Plan for implementation of Solid Waste Management Project in all the 168 Urban local Bodies (UlBs) of Chhattisgarh, officials informed.
It will also get a feasibility study and Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared for all UlBs in the State.
Meanwhile, it may be recalled that top brains currently being nurtured in the country’s premier business and technology schools will soon get assignments to prepare urban development plans for civic bodies in Chhattisgarh.
The Chhattisgarh Urban Administration and Development Department has decided to invite interns comprising mainly students and researchers from renowned institutions like IITs and IIMs who would help in preparing better plans for management of water supply, low cost housing, sewerage management, solid waste management, poverty eradication, study of various State and Central schemes related to vehicular traffic management in urban areas.
Moreover, as per official information released during May this year, under the AMRUT Mission the nine municipal corporations- Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Bhilai, Korba, Rajnandgaon, Raigarh, Jagdalpur and Ambikapur- have been selected wherein ‘Shahar Sandhan Yojna’ (City Research Scheme) will be launched.
The scheme is aimed at utilising the educational knowledge of students and researchers in better development of cities, officials said.
SUDA has already issued directives to all nine Municipal Corporations in this regard.
The students in final year of graduation or post graduation studying Engineering, Management, Town Planning, Environment, Technology or Social Studies will be eligible for carrying out the studies. The research scholars can also take part in the studies in various municipal corporations.

Notably the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) would soon be setting up anOrganic Waste Converter (OWC) for conversion of organic wastegenerated daily in the vegetable markets in the city.
The waste collected would be converted into organic manure.
Notably, 100 per cent door-to-door collection and waste segregation would be
taken up as per RMC’s ‘Smart City’ plans.
It may be recalled that last month, the Chhattisgarh Government decided to establish composite production unit in vegetable markets of cities across the State for manufacturing organic fertiliser using fruits and vegetables.
SUDA has issued directives to all 168 urban bodies to send information about the vegetable markets in respective areas, where significant amount of fruit-vegetable waste is found.
Commissioners of Municipal Corporations and Chief Municipal Officers of Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats have been instructed to send information within three days.
It is noteworthy that Agriculture Department will set up composite production units in market.
The Chhattisgarh Government is also mulling over plans to mobilise additional financial resources through 14th Finance Commission recommendations for implementation of the AMRUT project in nine cities of Chhattisgarh, officials stated.
The action plan drawn up by the Government has already prioritised proposed investment across cities as per principle of prioritisation of AMRUT. Investment had been broadly distributed across nine AMRUT cities. Distribution of Investment is based on priority for providing 100 per cent universal coverage in primary thrust sectors.
Overall the Mission Thrust areas under AMRUT Project would be — Water supply, Sewerage and Septage Management, Storm Water Drain, Pedestrian, Non Motorised and Public Transport Facilities, Parking Space, Green Spaces, Park and Recreation centres.
