The Raipur district is notorious for the number of crimes pertaining to rape and gang rape, with 600 cases registered with various police stations between 2009 to June 20, 2013 in the district.
The details submitted to the Chhattisgarh Assembly had revealed that there were a total of 576 cases of rape and 24 cases of gang rape registered between 2009 to June 20, 2013 in Raipur district.
The second highest number of rape and gang rape cases had been registered in Sarguja district with 368 cases in which there were 344 cases of rape and 24 cases of gang rape . The third in the list of the maximum number of rape and gang rape cases had been Surajpur district with 358 rape cases in which 328 cases are of rape and 30 are gang rape cases. Fourth in the list is Jashpur with 355 cases in which 340 were rape cases and 15 gang rape cases.
Korea district came fifth with 302 rape and gang rape cases registered out of which 280 are rape cases and 22 are gang rape cases. The total number of rape and gang rape cases in other districts of the State are as follows – Baloda Bazar ( 71), Mahasamund ( 150), Dhamtari (132), Balod (126), Bemetara (106), Rajnandgaon (191), Kabirdham (100), Gariaband (73), Mungeli (54), Janjgir-Champa (153), Korba (208), Korea (302), Balrampur (267), Jagdalpur (241), Kondagaon (19), Dantewada (43), Sukma (3), Bijapur (24), Narayanpur (18) and five cases in the Railways. In all, the State registered 4,978 cases of rape and gang rape cases out of which 4,735 were rape cases and 243 were gang rape cases between 2009 and June 20, 2013.
