The Superintendent of Central Jail Raipur has been suspended after a team of district administration and police officials carried out a surprise check of the jail premises and found sharp edged weapons, opium and other contraband items inside the jail on Thursday.
“Rajesh Gaikawad, Jail Superintendent, Raipur had been suspended after several objectionable objects were found in the jail during a surprise check carried out by a team of district administration and police officials on my directives,” Director General, Jail and Correctional Services, Girdhari Nayak said.
The charge of Raipur Central Jail has been given to Deputy Inspector General, Jail, Dr KK Gupta, he informed.
Notably, on November 21, a prisoner was stabbed to death by another convict in barrack number 8 of Central Jail, Raipur. Earlier, this high-security prison has hogged the limelight after jail inmates had started a ‘Satyagrah’ inside the jail. It is also worth mentioning that Raipur Central Jail has several key Naxal leaders as prisoners.
