Quick collection of evidence key in online crime: Expert

The biggest challenge before the police is to identify, collect, acquire and protect digital evidence related to online crimes, Special Director General Chhattisgarh, R.K. Vij said on Saturday.

Criminals are constantly changing their modes on electronic devices, Internet and social media, he said.

Vij was giving the keynote address at a two-day online workshop for police officers of Bilaspur and Surguja Range organised by the Forensic Investigation Agency, Bilaspur.

The Indian government has issued guidelines to collect, acquire and protect electronic devices such as computer parts, mobiles and CCTV cameras after a crime. This is useful for identification of electronic and digital evidence of the crime, he said.

Every police officer needs to have knowledge about the entire process of sending these to cyber labs for testing and producing them in court, he added.

Vij pointed out that there is a need to maintain the original form of the evidence, which can be admissible in the court. Then only the criminals in online crimes will be caught and justice delivered to the victims.

He said after any online crime, people should immediately register complaints on toll free number 155260 and website cybercrime.gov.in.

The police need to regularly update themselves regarding online crimes and modes of investigation, he added.
