Punjab Government has decided to generate electricity from paddy stubble to overcome the problem of burning of paddy stubble in the fields by the farmers. It will do so by setting up power generation plant at the cost of Rs 10,000 crore in the state during the next paddy season.
This was revealed by Science Technology Principal Secretary Dr Roshan Sunkaria here on the inauguration newly set up innovation hub at Pushpa Gujral Science city.
Sunkaria said that Punjab Government ten days ago singed a MoU with a company to set up power generation plant at the cost of Rs 10,000 crore and plant would run on paddy stubble. He said the state government was facing a great difficulty to manage more than 20 million tones of paddy stubble every year as the national green tribunal has banned its burning due to rising level of air pollution.
He said 20 percent of the stubble would be used in the manufacture of ethanol for use in petrol or diesel and NTPC has also decided to use stubble in the thermal plants in lieu of coal after making its pallets.
lauding the efforts of Pushpa Gujral Science city in constructing a new gallery named as innovation hub to promote innovative techniques and engage youth in creativity, he said that innovative hub would provide all facilities to nurture new ideas and help develop inquisitiveness among younger generation.
The innovative hub is developed with the financial assistance of National council of Science Museum which would support the project for next three years.
