Power surplus C'garh slips on keeping demand-supply balance in Jan'16

Chhattisgarh — a power surplus State slipped on maintaining demand-supply balance with deficit of 22 million units in January 2016.

The month of January this year wasn’t the most comfortable for Chhattisgarh in terms of power demand and supply position with a deficit of 22 million units, according to a power supply position (provisional) report of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

As per the report, in the January month, power requirement in Chhattisgarh was pegged at 1964 million units (MU) against availability of 1942 MU.

On the other hand, the peak power demand in Chhattisgarh during January 2016 was 3472 MW while peak demand met was 3377 MW- a deficit of 95 MW.

Overall, the demand-supply situation between April 2015 to January 2016 wasn’t rosy either with requirement of 21253 MU against availability of 20,934 MU indicating a deficit of 319 MU.

Notably, Chhattisgarh achieved actual cumulative power generation of  40,173.66 million units (MU) from conventional power stations based in the State of above 25 MW capacity between April-September, 2015, according to the monthly report of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

This was compared to 38773.39 MU generated during the corresponding period of the previous year—a growth of 3.61 per cent, it stated.

Chhattisgarh would have 26,012 million units of power available during 2015-16 against the anticipated requirement of 24,980 million units during 2015-16, according to an earlier report of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Chhattisgarh State would also have 1032 million units (MU) of surplus power generated during 2015-16 and the peak requirement is anticipated at 3,825 MW against the anticipated availability of 3,857 MW- a surplus of 32MW, it had mentioned.

As per CEA's actual power supply position versus load Generation Balance Report ( lGBR) for the year 2014-15, the actual energy shortage in the western region during 2014-15 was higher than the forecasted figure on account of higher energy requirement as compared to availability, the report pointed out.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company ltd (CSPGCl) has three major projects in the hydro power sector lined up for development in the coming financial year.

The proposed projects are Matnar Hydro Power Project (HPP) ( 3x20) MW ( 60 MW) in Bastar district, Kanhar HPP ( 2x25) MW (50 MW) in Surguja district and Rehgar HPP ( 3x32) MW  (96 MW) in Surguja district, officials stated.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh government is now going all out to develop sizable hydro power potential to electrify villages in remote pockets of the State.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) had earlier invited reputed consultants  from the field of Development of Mini/Micro/Small Hydel projects for conducting detailed survey, investigation and preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the development of Mini/Micro Hydro Power projects at various locations and electrification of remote villages through hydro projects in Chhattisgarh State, officials stated.

The proposed projects are going to work in isolated mode. The capacity of the project shall be designed to fulfill the agricultural pump and lighting load requirement of the villages/hamlets within the vicinity of the project. Therefore electrical load demand survey has to be conducted in the nearby area of the project site covering required load requirement and provision for the future demand, they stated.

A survey for power distribution through local grid using weather proof cables and locally available wooden pole or with any suitable material using cost effective method would be conducted.

Chhattisgarh maintained a steady grid discipline through its scheduled drawal of 7776.70 million units against its entitlement of 8725.70 units in the western region during 2014-15.

This is as per the report of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) on scheduled drawal of energy by states and union territories vis-a-vis their entitlement from Central Generating Stations during 2014-15.

The CEA anticipates peak energy demand of 3417 MW against 3556 MW availability during the current month in Chhattisgarh.

The general energy requirement in Chhattisgarh is anticipated at 2040 million units (MU) against availability of 2103 MU- a surplus of 63 MU during July month, it stated in a report.

Overall, the anticipated power supply position in 2015-16 in Chhattisgarh would be 24,980 MU against availability of 26,012--- a surplus of 1032 MU, the CEA had stated.
