Power from new coke oven battery heat soon

Published on:

The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) — the flagship unit of Steel Authority of India (SAIl) will utilise the heat contained in the hot coke for generating steam and power.

The heat produced using conventional coke quenching process for steel making was earlier going waste in the plant.

The power would be generated from the new 7 metre coke oven battery of the plant using the coke dry quenching technology, officials stated.

Notably, BSP also is

setting up the ultra modern Universal Rail Mill of 1.2 MT capacity with all the associated facilities to cater to the requirements of Indian Railways with enhanced

quality at Universal Rail Mill complex.

BSP will be able to roll out long rails of 130 metre as a single piece as also other required grades of rails from this new mill. The installation of all the main equipment with the associated auxiliary packages of upcoming URM complex are rapidly advancing and testing & trails are going to be taken up soon.

To facilitate turning of URM Rolls & Straightener Rings, four numbers of state-of-the-art CNC Roll turning lathes for (Project Package No:142-01) were installed.

This project are awarded on turn-key basis to the consortium consisting M/s HANKOOK Machine Tools Co., Korea  as consortium leader and M/s Sanmathi Enterprises, Bhilai, as Consortium member at a total cost of Rs 22.4 crore. The engineering consultant is M/s MECON ltd.

On successful completion of Design & Engineering, ordering and supply of the imported machines and indigenous components, all the machines were erected at site with all accessories including Civil & electrics.

Subsequent to trials of individual and integrated testing & trials of equipment the trail production of turning of Rail mill rolls commenced at a grand function at project site.

The trial production inaugural function was witnessed by the top management of Project team including R.S. Chaturvedi, ED (Projects), R Chandramohan, GM I/c (Projects), TB Singh, GM (Projects), TR Yadav GM (Projects) and A.V. Kamalakar, GM (RSM & RTRS) and all officials of Project and operation.

These up-to-date CNC machines of nomenclature R25Wx5000 are equipped the with latest CNC controller 840D- Si of Siemens. The maximum diameter can be machined be 1300mm, maximum length be 5000 mm and the maximum weight of the rolls being 25 tonnes.

The various roll grooves will be turned to suit profile for  IRS 45 Kg/m, 52 Kg/m, UIC 60, 136 RE 14(68Kg/m),75Kg/m Rails and other international Rail products such as U54, 45E-1, Asymmetrical Rail Zu-1-60, Groove & Tongue Rails.

The CNC Roll Turning lathes for URM shall be used for turning outer diameters of blank rolls of Breakdown(BD) mill stands and Tandem Mill stands(TDM), Making initial pass grooves by turning on the above mentioned blank rolls, Re-dressing of outer diameters and pass grooves after wear and also for Re-dressing of Horizontal &Vertical straightening Rings.

This achievement of commencing the trial production at CNC Roll turning lathes for URM is an important milestone for the URM Complex project and definitely a memorable event for project team & the entire collective ofBSP to rejoice, officials stated.
