'Power crisis will be greatest curse for development'

India is not self-reliant in fossil fuel. Besides, fossil fuel is becoming deficient rapidly at global level also. As such, its right utilization and conservation is needed, said former director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and eminent nuclear scientist Padmavibhushan Dr Anil Kakodkar.

Delivering a lecture on “Emerging energy challenges and opportunity” at the golden jubilee lecture organised under the golden jubilee year of Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University here on Tuesday, Dr Kakodkar said that energy is the symbol of progress, development and prosperity of any country. Improvement in energy efficiency is a national mission. In addition to that maximum utilisation of renewable energy from available sources at local level should be done, he added.

He said that today, a serious thought has been made across the world for exploration of alternative sources to power generation measures based on carbon emitting fuel and developing of nuclear energy based power plant on the top of it, as it is the zero green house gas emitting medium.

Creation of employment to trained human resources in all the fields like engineering, technical science and humanities in the utilisation of energy conservation  and nuclear energy and per capita energy consumption have been doubled in India, China, Russia and the Middle East, but energy consumption in the USA, Japan and the European Union has been decreased.

In the run for maintaining equality on global economic level, if the developing countries would not establish coordination between exploration of energy sources and environment changing policy, it should be ready to face the dreaded situation of global warming. If power crisis has not been taken seriously, it would be proved as a greatest curse in the development of India, as, unfortunately, natural resources like mineral oil petroleum, gas and high quality coal are limited here. We have to import large quantity of petroleum products.

According to economists, if one dollar is hiked on one barrel crude oil, 425 million dollar additional expenditure would be added to the oil import bill of India. It means, increase in oil prices would impact our exchequer directly.
