Power companies hold mock drill to handle emergency

A mock drill for dealing with emergency situation like sudden shutdown of power plants was jointly carried out by engineers from the Chhattisgarh State Power Transmission, Generation and Distribution Companies, officials informed on Monday.

The mock drill was aimed at evaluating the efficiency of power companies to re-start the power generation in case of inter-State power grid shut down.

“The ‘Black start grid restoration’ drill was conducted at the load dispatch center wherein company official found out that in case of complete blackout it would take maximum 15 minutes to supply the ‘start up power’ to East Korba Thermal Power station,” Deputy General Manager (Public Relations) Vijay Mishra informed.

The mock drill was also monitored by experts from West Region load dispatch centre, Mumbai, he said.

The western grid comprises of Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The grid registers average consumption of 42,000 MW power every day, he added.

Since this gird is connected with several states, the malfunctioning in power houses can pose server challenges, he said, while adding that this mock drill has to be conducted twice in a year.

Detailing about black out, he said that in such conditions power generation units totally stop functioning so for re-starting the plant hydel or gas bases power stations are put into use.

In Chhattisgarh Bango hydel power station has been earmarked for this purpose where a 250 KVA diesel generator set has been installed, he pointed.
