Police face daunting task in fetching bodies for autopsy

Due to the threat of a Maoist attack, carrying out investigation of unnatural death in insurgency infested areas has emerged as a daunting task for the local police and the security forces.

A force of more than 200 jawans is needed for providing back-up to the local police who go for fetching the deceased’s body for post mortem examination or carrying out further investigation at the spot in insurgency infested areas of Bastar.Such is the scenario in Dantewada, Bijapur, Sukama, Konta, Geedam and adjacent Naxal affected areas, where the police officials have to accompany at least two companies of the security force to counter any possibility of a Naxal attack.

A recent incident was reported in Kaor village of Dantewada district, where the woman Sarpanch’s son was killed.Following the information, a team of local police was accompanied with a force of over 300 jawans to fetch the body for autopsy in Geedam government hospital. The local police went through similar experience when a woman resident of Nagalsar area committed suicide by hanging herself to the branch of a tree, in the recent past.

On reporting the incident, a team of local police accompanied by more than 200 jawans of the security forces reached the spot to investigate the case. The police claimed that as the body was so decomposed, it could not have been taken to the hospital for post mortem examination. Therefore, the police called Dr Mahendra Prasad from Darbha government hospital to perform autopsy in the village.Sources from the police department said that taking a huge contingent of the security force to fetch the body for post mortem or every time going for investigating the matter in case of unnatural deaths in Naxalite-sensitive areas also delays the procedure.

Sources claimed that there are many areas, where the local police avoid a visit even in case of unnatural death and ask the villagers to bring the body to the head-quarter for post mortem examination.
