The construction of roads under Pradhanmatri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY), one of the flagship programmes of Government of India is running on snail pace in Chhattisgarh. The State Government has been able to complete only 756 kms road construction out of 1,900 km sanctioned road under the scheme.
Expressing concern over the trend Rajesh Bhusan, Joint Secretary and Director General National Rural Road Development Agency (NRRDA) Ministry of Rural Development Government of India in a letter to Chhattisgarh Government, has asked to ‘draw up a completion plan’ to finish the pending work.
According to the letter, in Chhattisgarh the balance length pending for completion by January last year was 8735 kms. For year 2013-14 state was sanctioned 429 kms of additional roads. The target length during this period was 1900 kms out of which by January 2014 only 756 kms of road was constructed which makes 39.80 percent of the target.
The DG NRRDA expressing concern over the pace of road construction said in the letter addressed to the state government “the completion trend in 2013-14 up to January in your state is very slow as compared to available sanctioned length. This is a cause of great concern.”
looking into the current trend of progress the DG, NRRDA said, ``it is required to take necessary corrective measures so as to complete the work in stipulated time period and achieve the target length,’’.
He also suggested reviewing the pending road works in detail with relevant Project Implementation Units (PIUs) and State Rural Road Development Agency (SRRDA) officials and draw up a realistic completion plan for ensuring the achievement of the target within the stipulated period.
