Physiotherapists threaten strike; demand 'Physiotherapy Council'

Published on:

Chhattisgarh Association of Physiotherapists (CAP) has demanded from the State Government to form a ‘Physiotherapy Council’. The demand had been pending for more than a decade, it stated.

The physiotherapists will go for strike in December in support of their demand.

CAP State president Dr Kartik Baghel said that the Physiotherapy course was started by the State Government in 2002 and about 10,000 students have completed the course till date. However, the Government has not taken any step for their registration and employment.

CAP had organised a strike in 2012 and the Government had ordered for formation of Physiotherapy Council. But the Council has not been formed even after two years of the order, said Baghel, adding, that a memorandum was handed over to the Chief Minister in September this year. The physiotherapists of the State are being exploited for not being registered with any recognised body. They are forced to work on meagre payments since Government has not appointed physiotherapists in the hospitals.

“The physiotherapists have played an important role in success of Chief Minister’s ‘Bal Hriday Yojna’. Physiotherapy is an integral part of District Rehabilitation Centre’ and the physiotherapists are involved in life saving activities in hospitals,’ said Dr CP Singh, adding, that yet the Government has over looked them. There are no rules and regulations for examination and appointments of physiotherapists and therefore Physiotherapy Council is a must for institution, education and profession, said Singh.
