Peacocks, the national bird of the country, are struggling for their survival in Tandula dam area of the district. As the climatic condition of the area suits the bird, large number of peacocks are found here.
Ironically, neither the forest department nor the State Government has conducted any survey or made any safety provisions for these birds. According to forest officers peacock killing is an offense, but not selling its feathers.
Human interference and wild animals have become the most common reason for its extinction. Besides, more than six peacocks have died in road accidents in the last three months. R Thakur, sub divisional officer (SDO), forest said that they would send a proposal to the State Government to save the wildlife soon.
As Tandula dam is the only water source of the area, everyday dozens of wild animals like wild boar, bear and dogs visit the place and carry away the eggs and chicks of the peacocks with them as it is their favourite food.
Sometimes, human beings also mercilessly hunt the peacocks for its feather and flesh. Therefore the number of peacocks is reducing at a faster pace. Sources said that as of now, about 150 peacocks can be seen near Tandula damn.
