Over ambition promotes corruption: DGP Awasthi

Over ambition leads to corruption. Today everyone wants a shortcut in their work and this boosts corruption, Chhattisgarh’s Director General of Police D.M. Awasthi said here on Monday.

He was addressing the students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Bhilai) on the occasion of Vigilance Awareness Week (VAW) through a webinar, a press release said.

“Several awareness programmes are launched every year but they fail to eliminate corruption in India. To curb corruption, we will have to bring changes in ourselves,” he said.

Sharing a story from his childhood, the DGP told students that when he was in Class 8, they were asked to write an essay.

“Others wrote about population and poverty. I was convinced that corruption was the biggest challenge before the country. The biggest reason why poverty still exists is corruption in our system,” he said.

VAW is observed in every government institution and academy but corruption still has become a major problem, he said. It cannot be resolved by lectures or seminars. "We will have to improve our morality."

"The only solution to corruption is that we have to believe in ourselves that we will not practice corruption nor allow others to do so. We need not observe VAW," he said.

"I believe that IITians are the best engineers in the world who are honestly and silently contributing to the nation's development,' the officer added.
