One more person has succumbed to jaundice in the city taking the toll of such deaths to 35 and altogether 41 across the State.

The latest victim, Mangleshwar Singh (50), a resident of Rewa died during treatment at a private hospital after being shifted from Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Hospital in the city on Monday night.

Sources said Singh had come to his brother's place in Kanshiram Nagar and was ill for past few days. He was admitted to Dr Ambedkar Hospital with acute pain in stomach and his body turning pale.

He was shifted to a private hospital in Devendra Nagar area on Monday afternoon when his family members found no improvement in his condition. However he died during treatment by the night.

His family members claimed that the doctors informed them that the patient died of jaundice.

On Monday, Chandrakanta Srivastava, a resident of Kushalpur area had died of jaundice. Kushalpur is among the two dozen jaundice affected areas of the city.

The other jaundice hit areas include Deen Dayal Nagar, Purani Basti, lakhe Nagar, Baijnathpara, Ramsagarpara, Kankalipara, Nehru Nagar, Bhatagaon and others.

Although the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) and Health Department have been conducting health camps, cleanliness drives and distributing chlorine tablets in the affected localities, all their efforts have proved of no avail as jaundice continues claiming lives.

RMC officials claimed to have distributed several thousands chlorine tablets to purify the drinking water. New water connections have been provided to the residents in different localities including DD Nagar.

On the other hand, the residents claimed that they were fed up of using chlorine tablets. Contamination of drinking water is the sole cause and the disease can be checked only pipelines are replaced.

Civil surgeon Dr BK Das claimed that the number of patients coming to health camps has reduced and the situation is under control.
