Five days after a major gas leakage at Pump House No 2 of the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) leaving six people dead and 40 others injured, a contract labourer on Tuesday fell from a platform while preparing for welding work at the plant resulting in his death.

A statement issued by BSP stated that BSP’s Blast Furnace No 6 was under capital repairs since April 6.

Jagdish Sahu, 25, a contract labourer with M/s Sai Construction, engaged in the ongoing repair jobs, was preparing for welding work on Platform No 4 when he fell down on the platform on Tuesday at around 11.45 am.

His co-workers immediately rushed him to the Plant’s Main Medical Post, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. The exact cause of his death can be ascertained only after post-mortem, it stated.

It further clarified that neither did Sahu fall from any height nor is the incident related to any gas leakage. The family of the deceased would be provided all assistance as per company rules which includes providing appointment to a dependent of the deceased person. An enquiry would be conducted to find out the cause of the incident, the press release added.
