Deaths due to botched sterilisation surgeries is not only sheer negligence but it’s also a matter of corruption and spurious medicines. The State Government and the Health Minister are directly responsible for it”, said AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi here on Saturday.
“The sterilisation camp was not run properly. The State Government is not owning responsibility and instead medicines are being burnt” Gandhi said while addressing a news conference in the Circuit House here. He slammed the State Government for trying to ‘hush-up’ the incident and demanded a thorough investigation.
“First of all, it should be found out what had happened. Certainly, something was amiss somewhere. I felt very sad. The entire family suffers when the mother suffers” he said.
As per schedule, Gandhi arrived at Swami Vivekanand Airport in Raipur this morning and met some senior party leaders including CGPCC president, Bhupesh Baghel and former Union Minister, Charandas Mahant at the airport. He then left for Amsena village of Bilha development block in Bilaspur district to meet the kin of two women identified as Rekha Nirmalkar and Ritu Verma, who died after the sterilisation surgery.
He then visited Apollo Hospital to meet another victim of the incident, Shitala Yadav. Gandhi also visited CIMS Hospital where the affected women are being treated. The sterilisation surgeries at Bilaspur's Government-run medical camps have so far claimed lives of 13 women and several of them ill.
