The would be medicos coming to join Jagdalpur Medical College will have to search an abode for themselves as the medical college administration is finding it hard to accommodate them in the existing hostel, including the rented one, thanks to the delay in construction of the new campus of the medical college and Medical Council of India’s order doubling the number of seats for admission.
Notably, from its very inception Medical College Jagdalpur has been facing the crunch of infrastructure. With even 50 seats the college administration was finding it hard to accommodate the students of new batches and was utilising two hired buildings to house the outsider students as locals somehow managed to commute from their own houses or resided in rented house.
The lingering delay in completion of the under-construction medical college new campus at Dimrapal is stated to be the main reason behind this problem. The recent doubling of strength by medical council of India has worsened the problem of medical college as now they are facing the scarcity of classrooms for teaching the extra students let aside providing them accommodation.
Though the college management has decided to use the auditorium to use as teaching class for the first year students, on accommodation front, the new students, of which two took the admission on Tuesday, and their parents were told to arrange a suitable abode for themselves as no suitable building was available to the college to hire for hostel.
The college is also not charging hostel fee from any of the new batch students. Jagdalpur Medical College dean Dr U S Paikra said after shifting to new campus only new batch students could be able to avail hostel facilities. Presently, in view of the great constraint of residential space on the campus they are suggested to find an accommodation for themselves. The College is also not charging any hostel fee from them, he added.
According to sources, the new campus of the Medical College is being constructed 8 km away from the city at Dimrapal, but much to the chagrin of college administration, the building has not been completed in 5 years nor is the chance of its completion in near future as neither administrative block nor hospital block is in sight. Meanwhile, lack of approach road as well as water and power supply on the new campus notwithstanding, the college administration is hoping against the hope to shift to the new campus this year itself and only then the new batch of medicos will have the luxury of hostel.
