The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked other States to prepare working plans on the lines of plans prepared by Chhattisgarh for cleaning tributaries and basins of the river Ganga. The NGT has also formed a committee of nine States for preventing and controlling pollution in the Ganga and its tributaries and its meeting was recently held in lucknow.
Officials informed that according to NGT discharging of industrial polluted water and household waste water directly into rivers are the two main reasons for pollution in river Ganga and its tributaries. For effective prevention and control of pollution in the Ganga, the tribunal has formed three committees viz. Principal Committee, implementation committee and state level committee.
The State committee and implementation committee have been made responsible for implementing the orders of the tribunal. All district and State level officials have been ordered to extend full support to these committees.
Chhattisgarh Government initiating special efforts for implementing these orders formed a State-level committee headed by Secretary, Housing and Environment.
The Chhattisgarh State level committee taking note of the issues raised by NGT, has ordered industrial units on the bank of these rivers to install/upgrade water treatment plant as per the parameters laid down. They have also been asked to ensure more use the treated/recycled water and stop discharging waste water in rivers.
