New norms to facilitate identification of voters

The persons whose names are in the voter list can now cast their vote without identification document also.

They will be permitted to vote after verifying their identity from the photo voter list. Direction to the subject was issued by the State Election Commission on Monday. The officials said that in the circular issued to the Collectors and District Election Officers, the SEC has stated that 17 identification documents were permitted for a voter to cast vote.

However, if a voter fails to furnish any of the 17 prescribed documents, then his identity should be verified from the photograph in the voter list and he should be permitted to cast his vote. Similarly, the voters whose names are missing from the photo voter list could be permitted to cast vote by the presiding officer after the voter establishes his identity, officials said.

State Election Commissioner PC Dalei also visited polling booths in different wards of Raipur Municipal Corporation to take stock of the proceedings during the first phase of urban body polls here on Monday. Dalei accompanied by other senior officers reached polling station at Salem English School in Jagjivanram ward and observed the proceedings at polling booths number 492 and 493. He then moved to polling booth number 709, 710 and 711 at Madhavrao Sapre School in Swami Vivekanand ward and observed the proceedings.
