A Naxalite couple involved in multiple attacks on security forces and collectively carrying a reward of Rs 7 lakh surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said on Wednesday.

Madkam Aayta (25), involved in at least 17 Naxalite related incidents, and his wife Padaam Pojje (23) turned themselves in before police officials in Sukma town on Tuesday, Sukma Superintendent of Police Sunil Sharma said.

The couple said they were disappointed with the Naxalite ideology, Sharma added.

Aayta, a "commander" of the Kerlapal local organisation squad, joined the children's wing of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist in 2004.

He was involved in deadly attacks on security personnel and murder of civilians between 2012 and 2020 in the interiors of Sukma, Sharma said. He carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.

His wife Pojje was wanted in connection with five incidents including an attack in Phulbagdi area of the district in 2018 which injured five troopers. She carried a reward of Rs 2 lakh on her head.

They were given an immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 each and will be provided more facilities in line with the government's surrender and rehabilitation policy for Naxalites.
